Success Story: Lauzi Chilango – Restoring Dignity at 78

This year, we celebrate the incredible transformation of Lauzi Chilango, a 78‑year‑old grandmother whose life has been forever changed through the gift of safe housing.

Lauzi’s Journey

For most of her life, Lauzi lived in poverty, resigned to the belief that she would die in the same conditions she was born into. Her husband, a fisherman, passed away many years ago, leaving her to raise children who eventually moved away. When they heard that fortune had finally visited her, they returned to share in her blessing.

Her words capture the depth of this transformation:

“At 78 years, I can’t believe what happened to me. I was born poor and was waiting for my death poor. My husband died a fisherman and left me with children who have now come back to stay with me when they heard fortune visited me. I am watching TV like any other human being. We watch things we didn’t dream we would have. Thank you very much Shelter Equity and Asante Aid.”

Today, Lauzi enjoys the dignity of a secure home, solar power, and the joy of watching TV with her family—something she never imagined possible. Her children and grandchildren now gather under her roof, sharing laughter, light, and comfort. What was once a life of hardship has become a story of restored dignity and hope.
